The Windows Vista Anti-Recording Conspiracy Thwarted
For several years now, the ability to record audio on new Windows PC's has slowly eroded, until it's become virtually impossible to record anything but your Microphone on new Windows Vista machines. Recording streaming audio, or sounds from any application, simply couldn't be done. But today, that has changed.
Today is the official release day for Freecorder Toolbar Sound Recorder, our new free audio recording application that makes audio recording in Vista (and XP for that matter) better and more accessible for everyone. To understand why this is a big deal, it's helpful to know a little about the technology behind sound recording. But if you've recently bought a new Windows PC and tried to record audio, you've learned what I'm about to tell you the hard way.
Recording audio is traditionally done two ways: either by using a "loopback" line exposed by the sound card in your PC, or by using a third party program that creates its own Sound Card Driver. The loopback method has been slowly phased out, even with XP machines. There used to always be a "What U Hear", "Stereo Mix", "Wave Out Mix" or similar recording line on every sound card installed in every new PC, which hundreds of applications could use to record sounds. Then all of the sudden, many PC's shipped without loopback lines, especially with the popular RealTek cards, and millions of customers were out of luck- unless you had a recording application like Replay A/V with the Enhanced Sound Card Driver, Total Recorder or Soundtap. These specialized applications used custom written Sound Card Drivers to record, and didn't require a loopback line. However with Windows Vista, Microsoft has required that all drivers be certified and signed by Microsoft, which effectively kills this method of recording. If you own a new Vista PC with no loopback line, you are unable to record audio - until now.
Our new Freecorder Toolbar Sound Recorder uses a brand new audio recording method invented by us. It works great with Vista, XP and even Windows 2000, and doesn't require any special recording line or driver - it just works. Plus, an added benefit is Freecorder Toolbar's Sound Separation technology, which isolates sounds from the application it was generated in. This means that the beep from your Instant Messenger program won't wind up in the recording from your favorite internet radio station.
Our other products are getting this new technology shortly, but Freecorder Toolbar has it now, and it's totally free. Give it a try and enjoy!

One of the best new features is the search box on every page, which should make it easy to locate things on our site. And the new navigation is cleaner too.
If you see anything broken, or something we can do better drop us a line!
Finally - a big shout out to Debbie who did 99% of the work on the redesign, including fixing 1000+ pages. Way to go Deb!

The iPhone - Great for Mobile Media Lovers
I've always been a gadget hound. So, no surprise that I waited in line all day to be one of the first to grab an iPhone. The Apple iPhone is the ultimate convergence device. Sure, it's pricey, but I'm loving the fact that I have a phone, iPod , camera and email/internet device that fits nicely in my pocket. Plus, it is without a doubt the most beautiful device I've ever owned.
Replay AV, Replay Media Catcher and Replay Converter make great companions for the iPhone. Use Replay AV or Replay Media Catcher to capture online media. Use Replay Converter to convert your audio or video to a format suitable for playing on your iPhone. It's really easy. Replay AV will even transfer your newly recorded and converted media to iTunes automatically. Next time you sync the iPhone your recordings will be there ready for you to enjoy or show off to others.
Video that can be played in iTunes will sync with the iPhone. Use Replay Converter to convert your home movies to iPod video format and take them with you on your iPhone.
For me, the iPhone was worth the wait. It's functional and beautiful. This morning I heard that the Apple store I had camped out at still has a few in stock. My first thought was Ugh! You mean I stood in line all those hours for no reason??!! But actually, I'm glad I had the experience. It really was fun and exciting to be 9th in line. I proudly earned my geek badge on iPhone launch day.

New First-ever Streaming Flash Video and MP3 recorder
Forget the XM and Sirius merger, the really big news is Replay Media Catcher, a hot new utility that captures MySpace video and MP3s, as well as lots of other premium audio and video content from sites like ABC.com, NBC.com, and thousands more. The technological breakthrough is the ability to capture streaming Flash, which nobody has been able to do before. Go to www.replay-media-catcher.com to download a free trial copy and check it out!
Here's the official press release if you'd like to learn more:
New Streaming Media Recorder Captures Previously Unrecordable Online Video and Audio
February 21, 2007, San Anselmo, CA – Applian Technologies today announced the release of Replay Media Catcher, the first ever Online Video and Audio recorder for streaming Flash and MP3 sites. Replay Media Catcher allows customers to capture perfect digital reproductions from previously unrecordable premium destinations like ABC.com, NBC.com, MySpace™ and thousands of others, as well as popular places like YouTube™ and Google Video.
Replay Media Catcher uses a simple one-click recording interface. Customers just click the Start Recording button, and then play the streaming Flash video or MP3 audio to capture. Once Replay Media Catcher detects the media stream, it will continue to save a playable video or audio file on the PC hard drive, and the customer can then go in search of other media to record. Replay Media Catcher is able to record multiple streams simultaneously, limited only by the speed of the customer’s internet connection. Also included is FLV Player, which lets customers watch their recorded videos.
“Replay Media Catcher is the first ever production software to be able to capture RTMP Streaming Flash streams used by many of the top-tier content sites,” said Bill Dettering, CEO of Applian Technologies. “These unprotected, unencrypted files have been previously impossible to record for your personal use, and now Replay Media Catcher makes it possible to archive and enjoy more great online video without having to be connected to the internet.”
Replay Media Catcher is ready for download and immediate purchase from replay-media-catcher.com for $39.95. A free demo is also available. Replay Media Catcher requires a PC running Windows.

Slinging in the Rain (of criticism)
Sling is trying to be more out in the open about the Encryption controversy in their latest firmware. "Jeremy T" from Sling gave this clarification:
I’ve noticed a few posts wondering why we encrypted the stream (and lots of assumptions, both good and bad), and I realized I should’ve explained when we posted the build. We’ve actually been planning to enable encryption for quite some time, this just happened to be the build in which it went live.
Our goal with the Slingbox is to have a device that not only offers consumers new freedom in their ability to placeshift their content, but also a product that protects the rights of the content owners and creators as a whole. Additionally, we feel protecting the stream also helps secure your rights and privacy as a consumer. To this end, enhancing SlingStream protection has been on our roadmap for quite some time.
Unfortunately, it’s clear that the Applian At-Large Recorder has gotten caught in the middle of this. As a small company, we haven’t had the resources to properly support third-party developers at present, although it is our goal to eventually have an API or SDK for third-parties to use. If you consider the numerous ongoing software developments we have at Sling (Windows, OSX, Windows Mobile, other platforms, etc), we have to pick and choose where our engineering efforts go extremely carefully, and while we have very ambitious goals, we still have a lot of realities to deal with!
On a technical note, a few people have surmised that the encrypted stream either increases CPU overhead or decreases stream quality. We have done quite a lot of testing and have not seen these negative results. Our tests show the encrypted stream in the new beta firmware performing side-by-side with the unencrypted stream in the current firmware with no difference. Don’t forget: if you are not doing exact side-by-side comparisons, no two streams are exactly alike!
I hope this helps clear up the issue. I welcome any feedback and comments.
Here's our response:
Hi Jeremy -Thanks for the explanation, and your willingness to address the issue in the open. Let's break it down. You said:
Our goal with the Slingbox is to have a device that not only offers consumers new freedom in their ability to placeshift their content, but also a product that protects the rights of the content owners and creators as a whole.
Ummm... ever hear of TiVo?
Additionally, we feel protecting the stream also helps secure your rights and privacy as a consumer. To this end, enhancing SlingStream protection has been on our roadmap for quite some time.
If that's really an issue, just make it a selectable option like other customers have suggested.
I challenge you to give me the name of ONE customer who requested encryption for "privacy". Or do a forum search for anybody who has requested this feature. Keyword searches for "encryption" or "privacy" come up empty.
As a small company, we haven’t had the resources to properly support third-party developers at present. No, but you went out of your way to un-support a third party developer.
Jeremy, I look forward to continuing the dialog with you. Feel free to respond on the Applian blog.
Best Regards,
Bill Dettering

Of course, reader comments are welcome, too. I especially am looking for ANYONE who's in support of the encryption.

Press Release for At-Large Recorder
This press release hit the wires today, announcing At-Large Recorder:
SlingBox™ Recording Software Gets New Name, New Features
July 11, 2006 – San Anselmo, CA - Applian Technologies announced significant changes to At-Large Recorder, the first and only PC-based software that captures TV broadcasts directly from the Sling Media SlingBox™ device.
To avoid possible trademark confusion, Applian has changed the product name from Replay SlingCorder to At-Large Recorder. Although Applian’s recording product is fully compatible with SlingPlayer™, the name change was made to ensure customers recognized two distinct products and companies.
The release of At-Large Recorder also adds new features. Most notably, Applian’s popular streaming video and audio recording product, Replay A/V, is now able to capture SlingBox™ TV streams by using At-Large Recorder. Customers can now schedule multiple recordings on different channels, including daily and weekly repeating events. Replay A/V also records online video and audio clips, XM™ and Sirius™ radio, and thousands of radio shows, radio stations, TV stations and Podcasts accessed from the included Replay Media Guide.
“The new At-Large Recorder name makes it very clear that we are the online video recording experts, and not Sling Media,” said Bill Dettering, CEO of Applian Technologies. “Our customers have been delighted with the video quality and ease of use of At-Large Recorder with their SlingBox™ device. And with the Replay A/V and At-Large Recorder combination, our customers get the expanded scheduled recording features they’ve been asking for. This puts Replay A/V even further ahead of all other streaming video and audio capture products. ”
At-Large Recorder is available immediately for purchase from at-large-recorder.com for $29.95. Replay A/V, with At-Large Recorder included, is located at replay-av.com, for $49.95. Free demos of both products are available. At-Large Recorder requires a Windows based PC running SlingPlayer™. Replay A/V also requires a Windows based PC.

Replay A/V and Sirius now working together again
Well, I've calmed down a bit since my last rant about the online Sirius tuner, mostly because we've figured out a way to get Replay A/V and Sirius working together again. And even better, you can now record Howard Stern!
If you're a Replay A/V or Replay Radio user, download and install the update.
If you're not yet a customer, and want to be able to record Sirius shows automatically on your PC, give Replay A/V a try.
Also - in my new bliss, I've come up with a reason for the Captcha (those squiggly letters you need to reenter) which DOES make business sense. Perhaps they did this to prevent automated robots from stealing subscribers logins and listening for free.

Our beta testers have been delighted with the video quality and ease of use of Replay SlingCorder."

Replay SlingCorder Release
For all you SlingBox lovers, you'll be delighted to know that you can now record your SlingPlayer streams on your PC.
Our new Replay SlingCorder product lets you record high quality video from your SlingBox (tm) so you can watch anytime, anywhere. It's easy to record right away, or schedule recordings for a later time and channel. Videos are saved as unprotected Windows Media Video files.
Until today, the only way to record from your SlingBox was to use Screen Capture programs like Replay Screencast. This type of solution suffers from being harder to use, as well as losing quality. Replay SlingCorder makes an exact copy of the video stream, then reassembles the bits into a playable file, giving you the best possible quality.
It's curious Sling didn't add this capability to their player, and they showed no inclination to do this, so we built the solution for their customers. I suppose if I were rebroadcasting video feeds without the permission of the content owners, the last thing I'd want to do would be to further enrage the big media companies by also adding a recording feature. Nevertheless, recording is well within your legal rights, as long as you don't redistribute the content you've recorded. Rebroadcasting rights are much less clear.
Anyway, if you're a SlingBox owner, learn more or download a free trial here. Replay SlingCorder is $29.95.
And if you order by June 5, you can save $10 using this coupon code:

Radio on your iPod
I have a Sirius Radio in the family minivan, which I enjoy. For me, one of the nice things is that there's a lot of variety, and you can see what song you're listening to.
However, it never ceases to amaze me how much money they've put into developing their service. It ain't cheap to launch a satellite.
It's even more amazing to consider that we've built a better music listening system using Replay A/V and the iPod. In just a few days.
With Replay A/V 7.10, you now have the ability to record iTunes and Shoutcast stations and create an MP3 file for each song. Plus, the songs are tagged with the artist and song title, so you can see what you're listening to. You can even drag and drop iTunes radio stations into Replay A/V and have then recorded to your iPod for listening on the go. I have my iPod set up to get fresh music periodically from some really cool stations.
So... what are the benefits of Replay A/V + iPod over Sirius or XM?
- No subscription fees.
- You can skip over songs you don't like.
- You can replay a song you enjoy.
- Perfect Quality of Service. Your listening isn't interrupted when going into a garage, through a tunnel or under an overpass.
- You have access to thousands more stations.
If you want live traffic, weather or news, then satellite or traditional radio is still valuable, but for music, Replay A/V can't be beat.
Update: Replay A/V 7.10 is available now!

Replay A/V now available
After tons of work, Replay A/V is now available for download and purchase. It's best described as a TiVo for the Web. And it's totally awesome.
Replay A/V is the long-awaited sequel to Replay Radio. You can schedule and record streaming radio and video, and capture media using the new Stream Capture mode, or by using the old Audio Recording mode used in Replay Radio.
The Stream Capture mode is the big deal. This works by capturing the bits and bytes of the streaming feed, and reassembling them into a file that sits on your PC. Using it, you can record multiple radio shows at the same time. Plus, the audio reproduction is perfect, and the file sizes are small. And it works great for video as well as audio.
The other nice thing about Stream Capture mode is that it frees your Sound card for other uses. This means you can play games while it is recording, and no other noises will creep into your recordings. All Sound Card driver hassles are no longer an issue.
We've also spent some time with automatic conversions. This means that a Windows Media or a Real stream can be converted to MP3, so you can record using Stream Capture mode, and listen on your iPod. Nobody else has done this. It's really cool, and it works great.
Oh yeah - Sirius Online radio can now be scheduled and recorded as well. If you're a Howard Stern fan, or just a Sirius junkie, you'll enjoy this capability.
Anyway - check it out! Click here to learn more about Replay A/V and try a free demo today!
(One final note: existing Replay Radio customers can upgrade for just $9.95.)

Replay Screencast 1.1
Replay Screencast 1.1, our program to make screen capture videos, was released today. The huge improvement is the ability to choose between high motion and low motion recording modes.
Low motion is great for making software or Web site demos.
High motion can be used to record Flash Video, QuickTime, or other videos that cannot be recorded using WM Recorder and RM Recorder.
You can try Replay Screencast for free from here:

Real Networks on Portable Subscriptions
Portable Subscriptions aren't ready for prime time yet, according to Rob Glaser, Real Networks CEO.
From The Real Networks Q2 report via Adam Brotman:
Regarding portable subscriptions - Rhapsody to Go – Glaser commented that "consumer hardware is not ready for primetime"; he believes that portable subscriptions won’t be “ready for primetime” until 2006 because of the hardware; and that portable subscriptions are “more hype than substance right now, and not likely to change until next year”. After all that fanfare around Rhapsody-to-Go just a few months ago. Very interesting indeed. Like I've been commenting recently, it seems that portable subscriptions are confusing to the average person looking to get into online music, and they don't work on the iPod and...they don't work on the iPod. So, portable subscriptions are having a slow uptake. I like how Glaser says that the "hardware isn't there yet to give a big boost to portable subscription uptake." That's turning out to be an understatement. Did I already mention that you can't use the iPod to play your portable subscription tracks?
Uh... how about using Replay Music with your Digital Music Service and your iPod???

RSS Updates pages
I've been deeply moved by the awesome potential of RSS. I think about it a lot. There's a lot of cool applications for RSS we could do, and maybe will do, as long as it makes business sense. When thinking about cool technology like RSS, it can be hard to control the inner geek that just wants to build neat stuff with no market. Who knows what we'll do next????
Replay Radio's Podcasting client is really an RSS aggregator, and it was fun to build, and is fun to use.
(If you're not familiar with RSS, it's the means by which you can subscribe to a Blog to be notified when it's updated.)
On a practical level, we've made all of our product updates pages RSS. This means that you can use any Newsreader or RSS Aggregator (I use Bloglines) to be notified when a specific Applian product has been updated. Or, when ANY of our products are updated.
Our new master product updates page is here. From this link, you can view specific product updates pages, and subscribe to just those RSS feeds.Or subscribe to a single feed for all of our products.
Hats off to Debbie for making this all work beautifully.

Replay Screencast 1.0
Why have screen shots, when you can make Screen Capture Videos!
Check out our new Replay Screencast product. This was designed to make it easy for anyone to make a video from any window or screen region. Plus, you can add audio narration.
Replay Screencast is great for making software demos and tutorials, Powerpoint movies, capturing Webcasts, Neetmeeting, IM sessions, Webcams, and a whole lot more.
I love software that gives you that magical feelng when you first use it. Replay Screencast really is magical, as it makes old-fashioned screen shots come alive. In the next several days, we'll be making screencasts for our various recording products so everyone can really see how they work.

Replay Radio 6.03 (and why it's 6.03)
We released Replay Radio 6.03 yesterday, a minor update which adds the following:
New Record-to format of MP3 FM Quality: (This used to be in Replay Radio 5.x, and a lot of existing customers asked for this back.) We wanted to keep the choices simple for new users, but having this extra flexibility seemed like a better strategy, so it's back.
Firewall checking: Those darned firewall programs always seem to mess up any application that needs to access the Web. And most people have no idea that it's the firewall blocking Replay Radio that disrupts the tuning and recording process. Now, Replay Radio will check to see if it can access the Web anytime you click Settings, as a way to check if your firewall is about to cause problems.
This gives me an opportunity to discuss how we release software and do updates. With any product cycle, there's usually a big change, which gets tested a lot in-house. Once we're happy with it, we have a limited number of beta testers bang on it for a while. From there, it gets released, although we don't really announce it, and if any issues come up, we fix them right away. From there, we start spreading the word, and continue to tweak the software. Finally, when there are no big issues that repeatedly come up in our support emails, we have a really stable build.
This is why you'll often see versions like 6.03 soon after an official release. The 6.0 version was really good, but with just a few tweaks, we can made the experience better for everyone.

Replay Radio update and Bookmarkable shows
We released Replay Radio 6.02 tonight, with a few updates to make it better than ever.
Besides some minor enhancements, the cool notable thing we've managed to do is to offer some of Apple's (previously) exclusive Podcasts from our Guide - iTunes new music Tuesday, and Podfinder.
Not only that, but when you download them using Replay Radio, they become "Bookmarkable". This means that if you stop listening on your iPod, switch to something else, and then go back to a Podcast, you can resume right where you left off. This is especially handy for long talk shows.
Replay Radio actually can make ANY Podcast bookmarkable. If you were looking for a one good reason to use Replay Radio instead of iTunes or other Podcatchers, this would be it.
As always, Replay Radio is free for use with Podcasts. Check it out!

Skype call recording
We did an update to Freecorder, released yesterday, that lets you record Skype phone calls. It also works with any other PC based VOIP client.
In free mode, you can record up to 2 minutes. In paid mode, you have unlimited recording time.
Dave Winer suggested this to us, and it maks sense, especially for Podcasters wanting to do telephone interviews.
